Traumatic Brain Injury Symptoms

Because the brain controls so many important functions, the symptoms and effects of a traumatic brain injury (TBI) vary significantly. After a head injury occurs, symptoms can be frighteningly severe, or so slight that they may go unnoticed. A concussion is an example of a minor injury that the sufferer may write off as just a headache, or temporary dizziness. In reality, these side effects may be an indication of damage to the brain tissue.

Common Symptoms of Minor Traumatic Brain Injuries

  • Persistent headaches and/or neck pain
  • Trouble with memory, concentration or decision-making
  • Delayed thinking, speaking, action, or reading
  • Becoming easily lost or confused
  • Fatigue
  • Mood changes or mood swings
  • Disrupted or changed sleeping patterns
  • Dizziness and/or problems with balance
  • Nausea
  • Sensitivity to lights, sounds, or distractions
  • Vision blurring or tired eyes
  • Hearing problems or ringing ears
  • Loss of sense of smell and/or taste

Symptoms of Serious Traumatic Brain Injuries

Patients with more severe cases of brain injury may exhibit the above symptoms as well. Of course, in cases of moderate to serious injuries, the symptoms are likely to be more obvious and emergent. Seek immediate medical attention if you notice any of the following after a head injury:

  • Unconsciousness, however brief
  • Convulsion or seizures
  • Repeated vomiting or nausea
  • Inability to wake from sleep
  • Slurred or incoherent speach
  • Weakness or numbness in any of the limbs
  • Loss of coordination
  • Dilation of the pupils

Symptoms of Traumatic Brain Injuries in Children

After a child experiences a bump or blow to the head, keep a watchful eye on his or her behavior. It can be more difficult to distinguish warning signs and symptoms of brain injuries in children - especially those too young to verbally express what they are feeling. Contact a medical professional right away if you notice any of these symptoms in a child.

  • Tired or lethargic behavior
  • Vomiting
  • Irritability or crankiness, or long periods of inconsolable crying
  • Changes in eating habits
  • Changes in sleeping patterns
  • Changes in how the child plays, or lack of interest in favorite toys and activities
  • Changes in behavior or performance at school
  • Loss of newly acquired skills, such as potty training
  • Unsteady walking/loss of balance

What To Do If You See Or Experience
Symptoms of a TBI

Remember: symptoms of a brain injury are indicators of potential long-term problems. If you are experiencing symptoms, or know someone who is, seek medical attention immediately. After receiving care, assess the circumstances of the injury, including the financial and emotional hardships you and your family may be facing. If you believe your brain injury is the result of the negligence or misconduct of another, contact an expert attorney. Use the contact form on this page to send an inquiry to LegalView.
